This portrait is one of the first in my series and holds deep personal significance. Afsatou was once my student—bold, self-assured, and insistent that she be a part of this work. She couldn’t have been a more fitting subject. Originally from Burkina Faso, she moved to a small town in upstate New York as a young woman and faced the daunting challenge of learning a new language and culture head-on. Her resilience, grace, and quiet confidence made a lasting impression on me.

In this piece, she is depicted in profile, poised and composed, set against a vibrant blue pattern that echoes strength and growth. The backdrop—where stylized botanical motifs merge with subtle raised fists—speaks to both her personal power and the broader theme of women's empowerment. Her gaze is steady, her features defined by light and shadow, her natural hair pulled back with intention. The simplicity of her white blouse contrasts the complex story she carries.

Afsatou is more than a portrait. She embodies the bridge between my two worlds: my role as an educator supporting migrants and my deep commitment to celebrating empowered, authentic women through art.
